I was just reflecting on how we can use technology in training, and an idea popped up.
What if we used tablet PCs instead of books in the classroom. Imagine if they were connected wirelessly to the network, had access to the net, used Bluetooth enabled head phones, and connected wirelessly to a printer inside the classroom. They would also be connected wirelessly to the projector in a way that the instructor could call up any of the trainees' screens on the projector. Just imagine.
The PC will contain all the reference material which includes high resolution video, colored, detailed graphs and figures, and hyperlinks that cross-reference to other relevant points in the book. Instead of looking at a black and white figure explaining how a turbine works, the trainee will see video or an animation of the inner parts of the turbine in actual use by clicking on "Play Video" in the caption.
After the trainees finish a certain task they just press on the upload icon on the touch screen tablet PC. The trainees' work will then be uploaded to the teachers PC or a designated server for future reference, or to be checked by the teacher later.
The instructor would also have a wealth of videos, graphs, pictures, presentations, and all kinds of material at his finger tips in the a designated teaching aid server. A custom made application would make it easy to pull all of the different files together during the lesson into a coherent whole, properly sequenced to get the idea across to the trainee as clearly and quickly as possible.
Think of how much more we can teach our trainees. With the wealth of teaching aids, we'll spend much less time trying toexplain things. With the access time, we can fit more relevant material into the course syllabus resulting in trainees that know more and understand better than before.
With this approach the possibilities are endless and the potential benefits that we can reap are many.
It's a dream, but it's a dream that can very well come true.
