One of the problems that I notice with managers is that they issue too many directives. This tendency is simply too much to contain or maintain. This approach has several negative side effects:
· It deteriorates an administrators influence over time because he won’t be able to follow-up on everything.
· It disempowers his subordinates as they will have no time to focus on their objectives
· It distracts from the strategically important goals and objectives
General managers should save their power to focus and follow-up on the WIGs (Wildly Important Goals). If a subordinate is consistently not effective on the other issues and can’t improve, then he should be relieved in favor of someone who can.
