Actions truly speak louder than words. I was reflecting the just today or yesterday about how the prophet raised his children and family. It is the best family ever, yet I don't recall reading anything about complex psychological conditioning on the part of the prophet towards his family!
I mean, it was just loving them and caring for them and occasional instructions and teachings. In fact, the majority of the prophets style was just being nice to people to draw them, and being wise (remember to write about wisdom and how Allah "blessed" the prophet with it) to choose the right thing to do or say, and being honest, i.e. speaking from heart. That's it, basically. So, how did he have such a profound impact on his family, which mind you he didn't have a whole lot of time to spend with them?
The answer is being a model and amercing the family in good and decent society. Remember "Actions Speak Louder than Words". When people see how you behave and believe that you're honest because you yourself practice what you preach, than you will be effective in influencing them, especially your family.
The prophet said, "a sign of an imams wisdom is prolonging of his prayer, and the shortness of his speeches". There you have it.
So, a person has to defeat himself first before seeking to influence others. And that's why the companions of the prophet were so much better than those who came after them. And actions are an outgrowth of the heart. So, purifying your heart is correct first step.
Parents who don't practice what they preach feel they need to do a lot of talking, yet with no avail. Now, I guess I know why. I have same problem with my wife. I will become a better model for her, and my children. Ya rabb. Ameen.
