Google keeps generating great new stuff in a consistent flow of innovation and value. I was just looking into one of its latest services, its new navigation system and it has so many great features for FREE.
The fact of the matter is that Google is outperforming companies with its non-core business in their core business. For example, in my opinion, Chrome is better than IE or FF, Android (and probably Chrome OS) are on trajectory to be the best mobile OSs out there, and Google Docs is getting better than Office. It's almost like they can be the best at what they wish.
Part of their success is that they have accepted human way of achievement: let pure talent try out lots of stuff freely, and paradigms and norms will be broken and great value will ensue; the perfect organization!. Its a catalyst for releasing and liberating human potential. I know they still have to organize, but it seems that they have an effective balance where everything is unified but in a way that is kind of big and broad and inspiring and at the same time produces wealth (effective business model).
But this level of success is a DNA thing. It was built in from the beginning which means they had to get it right from the beginning in many different ways and several different levels; any slight deviation would have been evident and detrimental in the long run. In other words,they constructed their DNA correctly from the beginning.
I don't know if it is sustainable cause these kind of things usually aren't because lots of things have to be right and stay right for this kind of success to continue. Any kind of relaxation of standards will result in lower performance and disruption. This is usually caused by a natural human tendency called.... complacency.
